Schubert 200

Schubert 200 is a joyous reproduction of Schubert’s three great song cycles, recreating the authentic creative ferment and raucous atmosphere of the salon.

Schubert 200 is a project with Barokksolistene and Craig Ogden to record arrangements of and improvisations on Schubert’s three song cycles, in time for the 200th anniversary of their composition (2023, 2027 and 2028).

The cycles, Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang, mark both the beginning and the highpoint of the genre. They are rooted in a relaxed social and improvisatory environment – friends gathering for alcohol-fuelled cultural evenings in Vienna in the 1820s – an approach that has become almost entirely lost in modern performing traditions.

Our approach will be to bring back this more relaxed, accessible approach, and create an original, modern version that will paradoxically tap into a more authentic and ‘what the composer might have wanted’ feel.
