Schubert 200

Schubert 200 is a joyous and modern reproduction of Schubert’s three great song cycles, recreating the raucous atmosphere of the salon gatherings during which they were originally created.

Schubert 200 is a project with Barokksolistene and Craig Ogden to record arrangements of, and improvisations on, Schubert’s three song cycles in time for the 200th anniversary of their composition (2023, 2027 and 2028).

In this film, our Artistic Director Thomas Guthrie talks to Alexander Armstrong about the ideas behind the project, some of the exciting partners involved, and gives a tantalising taster of our new arrangement and animations of the first cycle.

The cycles, Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang are rooted in a relaxed social and improvisatory environment – friends gathering for alcohol-fuelled cultural evenings in Vienna in the 1820s – an approach that has become almost entirely lost in modern performing traditions.

Our approach brings back this relaxed, accessible approach, in creating an original, modern version with animations that invokes the atmosphere of the salon gatherings during which they were originally created.

We need to raise another £5,000 to complete the first song cycle. We are grateful for all donations.
