Discover Schubert 200
Schubert 200 is a collaboration with Barokksolistene (dir Bjarte Eike) and Outcry Ensemble (dir James Henshaw) to record arrangements of Schubertโs three song cycles to celebrate the 200th anniversary of their composition (2023, 2027 and 2028). Performances will tour nationally and internationally – sometimes with puppet and animations, sometimes with a full band, always with a tree branch.
The cycles, Die schรถne Mรผllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang grew from a relaxed social and improvisatory context – friends gathering for alcohol-fuelled cultural evenings in Vienna in the 1820s – an approach that has become almost entirely lost in modern performing traditions.

What to expect
Our way of sharing these songs brings back this relaxed, accessible approach, creating an engaging modern version that invokes the atmosphere of the salon gatherings for which they were created.

Reviews of our Die schรถne Mรผllerin recording
โThe immediacy and vitality of the arrangements is captivatingโฆ Guthrieโs vulnerability is touching and believableโฆ a Schรถne Mรผllerin like no otherโ (Andrew McGregor, BBC Radio 3 Record Review)
โThis interpretation of one of the greatest masterworks in the field of art song is a revelation. I can believe that people with an in-built negative attitude towards a genre that breathes haughtiness and artificiality can find this a tempting gateway to a new world, populated with ordinary human beings, having ordinary human feelings like happiness and sorrow, love and hate, reacting like the characters in the songs. The sharp dividing line between the cultures needs to be broken, to the benefit of everybody, and hopefully Thomas Guthrie can be the spearhead in this campaign to even out the wayโ (Gรถran Forsling, Musicweb International)
โA bold re-imaginingโฆ this is infectious stuffโฆ there is real intimacy hereโฆ Guthrie is the perfect narrator โ it really feels like he is telling a story, and as such, it feels like an hour-long story-tellingโฆ Guthrie and his players deliver โ this is a plateau of Schubertian loveliness garlanded, as the song proceeds, with gossamer violin arpeggiosโฆ This Mรผllerin is destined to captivate and amuseโ (Colin Clark, Classical Explorer)
โHis voice is simply gorgeous, carrying beautiful long phrases in which he seduces with timbreโฆ a highly successful interpretation of Schubertโs score, a recording that gets to the heart of the songsโฆ I believe Franz Schubert himself would be proud to hear itโ (Magnus Andersson, Klassekampen, Norway)
โVirile and determined, Guthrie rhapsodises about suffering, passion and jealousyโฆ hardened in soul-fire, the words are stab-wounds cloaked in melodiesโฆ plumbs Schubertโs abyssesโ (Roland H. Dippel, Concerti, Germany)
โGuthrie and Barokksolistene take Schubertโs song-cycle back to its rootsโฆ I defy any listener to stop their toe tappingโฆ. the immediacy of the performance is utterly persuasiveโฆ one really does feel sucked into the unfolding narrativeโฆ lovely, heart-tugging, head-voice tenderness and expressive rubatoโ (Claire Seymour, Opera Today)
โThe key to Guthrieโs fine interpretation lies in how he ties the intimacy of this role to an intimacy that on a deep level also characterises the musicโฆ the aesthetics โ the way the musical elements are conveyed โ are finely tuned and accurateโ (Emil Bernhardt, Morgenbladet, Norway)
Review of our Balham Bowls Club performance in November 2023
**** โThere arenโt many more joyful or straightforwardly attractive champions of classical music than Tom Guthrie: a serious musicianโฆ and a natural communicatorโฆ heโs introduced more first timers to the wonders [of Schubertโs two great song cycles] than just about anyoneโฆ Guthrie leads: hushed and intimate, bumptious, despairing, flitting around the emotions with Schubertโs fantasising, overemotional adolescentโฆ I whooped and hollered along with everyone elseโ (Robert Thicknesse, Opera Now)
Reviews of our London performance in 2021 in Middle Temple Hall
**** โThe performances were simply terrific throughout. Tremendous stuffโ (Guardian)
โGuthrieโs arrangement for Eike and the Barokksolistene is superb โ a fusion of folk, soundtrack and even jazz that finds unexpected new accents and colours in the familiar cycleโ (The Arts Desk)
โ(The approach) shines a light on Die schรถne Mรผllerin as a wonderfully structured piece of narrativeโฆ a thoroughly worthwhile achievementโฆโ (Bachtrack)
โhighly effectiveโฆ the audience loved itโ (Planet Hugill)
โMy friends said what are you doing going to that high-falutinโ place!?! But it was amazing. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I was in floods of tears by the end. I just believed the puppet was alive every second, and the music was so beautiful. Now I get what itโs all about. I felt I belongedโ (Audience reaction)
โIt was just the most magical, wonderful evening. Thank you, thank youโ (Audience reaction)
