Thomas Guthrie talks about The Consolation of Philosophy, written in 524 AD by a man called Boethius, sometimes called ‘the last of the classical Romans’.
He was highly educated in the ancient way of the classical Greeks, in what we might now call the Humanities (after him, very few people until the Renaissance were). He was also a Christian, an aristocrat, successful in his life as a statesman, friends with people in high places, people in power, well read, popular, until the gothic emperor King Theodoric turned against him, and he was accused of treason. Thrown in prison, he was eventually brutally executed.
